HMC-Series Horizontal Machining Center (HMC-500 / HMC-630)

HMC-series horizontal machining centers cut four faces of box-type parts in one setup, with pallet sizes of 500 or 630 mm, BT50 spindles, 40 to 60 station magazines and an optional two-pallet changer for production-cell operation.

Step 1 - Size the Pallet and Travels

A horizontal machining center is chosen around the pallet, not the part drawing alone: the pallet size sets the largest part envelope, and the X/Y/Z travels set how much of the part can be reached before the machine needs repositioning. HMC-500 and HMC-630 cover the common medium envelope for gearbox housings, pump bodies and engine covers.

Step 2 - Match Spindle and Tool Magazine

Horizontal machines cut four faces in one setup because the spindle points at the side of the part. Choose spindle taper and speed for your dominant material, and set the tool magazine capacity by the total number of tools needed across the family of parts.

  • Spindle taper: BT50 / HSK-A100 options for heavy cutting
  • Magazine capacity: 40 to 60 stations for mixed-part production
  • Through-spindle coolant for deep hole and steel machining

Step 3 - Plan the Pallet Changer

An automatic pallet changer (APC) is what turns a horizontal machine into a production cell: while one pallet is being cut, the operator loads the next one outside the enclosure. A two-pallet APC is the common starting point; larger pallet pools support longer unattended runs.

Step 4 - Set Accuracy and Acceptance Targets

Define positioning and repeat positioning accuracy per axis, and for a boring-focused job also confirm squareness between axes and the spindle axis. Make sure a sample part with a true position callout is used for the acceptance cut.

Key Acceptance Points

Check spindle orientation repeatability, tool change reliability at full magazine, pallet changer repeat positioning and the squareness of the accepted sample part. Dimensional conformance on a real workpiece is the most meaningful final check.
